Although Christmas is still more than seven weeks away, shopping malls are already gearing up to do battle for shoppers. The move came on the heels of the latest official data which showed that retail sales in the first nine months of 2014 fell by 0.4 percent from a year earlier period. Many retail industry experts have predicted that the retail sector's performance for the whole year will fall below that of 2013 - the first year-on-year decline since the outbreak of the SARS epidemic in 2003.

Caroline Mak, chairperson of the Hong Kong Retail Management Association, has warned that the city's retail sales would see a year-on-year decline again in October under the full impact of "Occupy Central" on local retailers. "I think it's only the matter of how much they (retail sales) are going to decline (in October). Even under the most optimistic scenario, the growth rate in October is expected to be nil," she said on Monday.

V city's total sales in the past two months increased by 12 percent from a year earlier because it is located outside the areas affected by the demonstrations. Evelyn Suen, assistant general manager of leasing at SHKP's leasing department, said considerable customer traffic has been directed to V city from the traditional shopping districts affected by the street blockades.

"We estimate the average expenditure per person this Christmas season will range from HK$2,000 to HK$10,000," she said, adding that she expected a 20-percent increase in sales at restaurants, jewelry shops and beauty shops. Suen said V city is expected to host nine million shoppers, up 25 percent from a year before, during the Christmas holidays. Mekiki no Ginji, a Japanese restaurant chain that has outlets in V city as well as the World Trade Center in Causeway Bay, said it will introduce special dinner sets and beverages to lure dinners during Christmas. It said sales at its V city outlet are expected to rise by 20 percent, thanks to the mall's promotion efforts.

Titicaca, a fashion chain targeting young women below 30s, however, is less optimistic about sales prospects this Christmas. It is planning to lure customers by offering big discounts of up to 50 percent on selected goods.

"Our best hope is to do as well as last year," said Erica Luk, Titicaca's general manager of Hong Kong region. "The prolonged demonstrations have been nerve-wracking," she said. "Some people may rather choose to just stay at home during the holidays," she added.

Korean cosmetics retailer Innisfree is among the first shops in the city to add a touch of festive mood. "This year's festival promotion is almost two weeks earlier than last year's and we hope this early warm-up can help boost sales," said the manager at an Innisfree shop at Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui.
